The ARA’s Young Leaders Advisory Board (Y-LAB) met in Canberra last week to review its 2025 Strategy and undertake local site visits.
The Y-LAB members spent the first quarter 2025 meeting discussing a renewed focus on how to be a stronger voice for young rail professionals, providing more meaningful connections and networking opportunities and considering ways to promote rail to tertiary students. Site visits were conducted on the Canberra Light Rail Stage 2A as it commences construction, as well as visiting the green track prototypes at the National Arboretum as they trial grasses and plants for the rail corridor.
The Y-LAB also held a roundtable discussion with Gillian Geraghty, ACT Chief Engineer and Director General of Major Projects Canberra. The group learnt how the ACT government is planning and funding for a sustainable and active/public transport centric city. The roundtable discussion also covered off topics including engaging young people in rail, workforce shortages and culture, project pipeline, freight and mode share.
