Safety

The ARA is working with governments, industry groups, private operators and unions to improve safety on our railway networks for both rail workers and the community. The National Level Crossing Safety Strategy 2023–2032 provides a blueprint for national actions needed to improve safety at railway crossings.

A national focus

The ARA supports a national focus on rail safety to make it easier for people to work safely across jurisdictions. We work with the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator on issues including fatigue management, drug and alcohol management and the review of national rail safety laws to ensure safety continues to improve and evolve. The National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers is under review by the National Transport Commission.

Improving safety data

The National Rail Safety Data Strategy developed by the ARA and the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator It is a purpose-built system that captures consistent and quality national data on rail safety.
It informs decision making and policy development on safety issues.

Rail Safety Week

Rail Safety Week is held each year and unites the rail workforce, law enforcement, government and community
groups, shining a spotlight on the importance of safety on and around rail. The rail industry is working with the ONRSR on the development of Australia’s first Code of Practice for train visibility.
