The ARA recently hosted an informative webinar detailing the various aspects of the new Professional Certificate in Rail.

ARA General Manager – Workforce Development, Fiona Love and her team highlighted the benefits of the industry-designed certificate, which is delivered in a flexible online format.

The session featured key industry experts: Tony Eid, Jonathan Barnes, Kershan Pillai, and Jane Copperthwaite, who each presented on different aspects of the courses that make up the certificate.

Jane Copperthwaite, a global leader in rail signalling, discussed the Introduction to Rail Signalling course. She explained how this course delves into the history, terminology, and safety features of rail signalling systems that play a crucial role in accident prevention. Jane also touched on emerging technologies and innovations, particularly in Australia, that are shaping the future of rail growth.

Kershan Pillai, a principal rail engineer, focused on the Rollingstock course, offering insights into various types of rollingstock, from high-speed to metro, and their relation to signalling systems. He highlighted cutting-edge developments like battery-powered and hydrogen fuel cell trains, which align with the industry’s sustainability goals.

Tony Eid, an expert in rail operations, emphasised the Rail Operations course as the heart of the professional certificate. He discussed its coverage of key areas like customer service, safety, freight operations, and infrastructure management. Tony pointed out the importance of collaboration across sectors and the vital role of freight logistics in driving Australia’s economy.

Finally, Jonathan Barnes, a civil expert, addressed the Rail Infrastructure course, exploring the critical role of tracks, electrical systems, and civil assets in supporting train operations. Jonathan stressed the need for ongoing innovation and maintenance to meet growing demands, such as heavier freight and higher service frequencies.

The webinar successfully illustrated how these courses provide professionals with a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between rail operations, signalling, rollingstock, and infrastructure, ultimately helping them contribute to the growth and safety of the rail industry.
