Representatives from the ARA attended the National Women in Transport Networking lunch on Wednesday 4 December, at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra.

The lunch was opened with remarks from Carolyn Walsh, Chair of the National Transport Commission and Narelle Rogers, Executive Advisor – Rail Capability and Engagement, was MC. Carolyn spoke about the significant work undertaken by the National Women in Transport initiative, and highlighted their Speaker Bureau, promoting greater visibility of women SMEs in transport.

The attendees also heard from keynote speaker Jo Farrell, ACT Australian of the year, who spoke on overcoming harassment and discrimination to find success in the construction industry. Jo spoke passionately about the power of sponsorship and mentorship in advancing women’s careers in traditionally male dominated spaces, and how the “bystander effect” causes significant harm. She challenged audience members of all genders to “kick open the door” and be proactive in their support and advocacy for women in their workplaces and wider networks.

The afternoon provided a relaxed networking opportunity and a great chance to chat with colleagues across the wider transport sector, both in Canberra and Australia-wide.
