The ARA is continuing to engage with transport agencies on measures to reduce the complexity of major project delivery following the recent release of new integration principles for successful rail delivery

The High Speed Rail Authority has already confirmed that it will look to apply the principles as the tenders for the landmark project are initiated, to support improved coordination and cut cost and complexity.

Major rail projects increasingly face challenges of scale, complexity, and technology that make effective integration critical to success.

Failures of integration has been a leading cause of delays, cost overruns, compromised functionality and reduced performance, both in Australia and around the world.

The ARA worked with members to develop the principles to guide successful project delivery and support a more structured and collaborative approach to integration.

The principles are supported by best practice case studies and have supported ongoing engagement with delivery authorities to highlight the significant cost and productivity benefits that can be achieved through a clear and coordinated focus on integration.

The ARA was pleased to confirm the High Speed Rail Authority has agreed to apply the principles as part of its procurement process. The application of the principles was one of 12 best practice procurement recommendations the ARA made to cut cost and complexity as the project is delivered.

Other measures included the use of standardised and simplified contract terms, fair risk allocation, streamlined management plans and compliance, and early contractor involvement and collaboration.

The principles will support a structured and collaborative approach to managing integration, which is becoming increasingly important as digital technologies play a growing role in infrastructure delivery.

The ARA is continuing to engage with delivery authorities and government agencies to support the wider adoption of the principles.
