The Large Suppliers Reference Group, composed of Class B members and above, and the Small to Medium Enterprise Reference Group, met this week to discuss key issues impacting the supply chain sector. This group plays an essential role in providing insights and strategic guidance to shape the strategic direction of the Rail Industry Executive Committee (RIEC) and the supply chain strategy.
The Groups were briefed on the new governance arrangements and were also provided with an update on the history of the RIEC work under the ARA’s Supply Chain Blueprint to date. The group reviewed the feedback from a recent survey to the ARA’s supply chain members to better understand member priorities and identify areas requiring improvement. This review aimed to ensure that the committee’s strategy and work aligned with current challenges and future opportunities.
The groups focused on defining the top three priorities for the local supply chain with the aim to enhance the effectiveness of local supply chains and address key challenges. Discussions in both meetings focused on the importance of developing a clear and compelling narrative to highlight the significant role supply chains play in driving economic growth and supporting communities, and for a sustainable local rail industry.
Another priority was the formulation of a government advocacy plan, recognising the importance of engaging government stakeholders and transport ministers to address systemic challenges for the rail supply chain to improve visibility of the sector and position it as a vital contributor to the nation’s prosperity.
The SME reference group’s discussions also focused on harmonisation in relation to standards, procurement, type approvals and local content, as well as highlighting the need for a smoother and transparent procurement pipeline to support workforce retention and development, as well as business planning, sustainability and investment.
The meetings reinforced the value of collaboration and networking, with the reference groups providing further opportunity for members to connect, exchange ideas, and stay updated on progress. The group also agreed to convene on an as-needed basis to provide timely input on emerging issues or strategic decisions.
