As part of Rail Safety Week 2025, the ARA joined Canberra Metro Operations (CMET) for a safety tour of their light rail vehicles. CMET provides the tour for new ACT Policing recruits to help prepare officers for any emergencies they may need to respond to on or near the Canberra Light Rail. The program highlights the importance of collaboration between transport operators, police and emergency services to support effective incident response and ensure the safety of passengers and the wider community.
A special thanks to CMET Community Engagement Manager Sally Coyle, and her team, who led the session, alongside Constable Richardson and his colleagues from Gungahlin Police Station. The visit reinforced the strong partnerships between CMET, AFP and the broader emergency services community, which play a critical role in maintaining public confidence and safety.
During the tour, participants also viewed the winning artwork from CMET’s Rail Safety Poster competition. This year, graphic design students from Gungahlin, Dickson and Daramalan colleges submitted 40 entries, with four designs selected to feature on the sides of two light rail vehicles throughout Rail Safety Week. These striking designs promote safe behaviour around light rail and showcase the creativity of local students.
The community is invited to take part, with public voting open for the People’s Choice Award until midnight on Friday 31 August. The initiative not only engages students in conversations about rail safety but also helps raise awareness among passengers and the public.
The ARA thanks CMET for this important Rail Safety Week initiative, and acknowledges the continued efforts of transport operators, police and emergency services in fostering safe rail environments across Australia.
