2019 June 18 | 09:00am

The Australasian Railway Association (ARA)’s Rail Careers Week will take place this week, from 17th to the 21st June.

ARA CEO Danny Broad said “The aim of Rail Careers Week is to promote the range, variety and number of career opportunities available in the rail sector, encouraging people of all ages and experiences to consider working in the industry.”

“The rail Industry is in a period of unprecedented expansion with increased opportunities available across Australasia. There is no better time to join and learn new skills,” Broad said.

A number of rail organisations around Australasia are taking part in Rail Careers Week including activities planned in three Australian states and New Zealand.

In New South Wales, Sydney Trains will host the first mid-year 'Try-a-Trade' day on 22nd June in Blacktown. These hands-on information sessions are for anyone interested in undertaking an apprenticeship. Participants are given the opportunity to complete a project using hand and power tools, under the expert guidance of tradespeople as well as invaluable opportunities to connect with current apprentices.

The Victorian Rail Academy has partnered with several of Victoria’s largest rail employers: The Level Crossing Removal Authority; Metro Trains Melbourne and V/Line; to host an Industry Immersion Experience Day for secondary students, on Wednesday 19th June in Newport. This will be an exciting day of learning activities to build students’ knowledge of work roles within the rail industry. Students will take a track walk, experience the railway via virtual reality, explore a train and participate in a 'track building' team activity, all within the Rail Academy’s off-network facility.

The Public Transport Authority of Western Australia has launched a recruitment campaign for Transit Officers on the new Forrestfield Airport Link line that will connect Forrestfield and Perth Airport to the CBD.

In New Zealand the ARA will partner with KiwiRail to host the first ever New Zealand Young Rail Professionals Forum in Auckland on Tuesday 18th June. These forums are an excellent resource for young professionals who work in rail and those interested in pursuing a career in rail.
