The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) has welcomed the appointment of Keolis Downer to operate and maintain train services in Adelaide from next year.

ARA Chief Executive Officer Caroline Wilkie said the SA Department of Infrastructure and Transport decision recognised the company’s extensive local and international experience delivering public transport services.

“South Australia’s public transport network is growing, with the electrification of the Gawler line now underway and the planned extension of the Flinders Link,” Ms Wilkie said.

“The contract confirmed today will ensure the smooth operation of the network as these projects are delivered.

“Keolis Downer brings a wealth of experience in delivering public transport services across Australia and overseas, with a strong focus on customer service.

“South Australians will now have the chance to benefit from that industry knowledge over the next eight years.”

Ms Wilkie said it was pleasing to see the eight year contract would provide opportunities to further enhance the customer experience on the network.

“Real-time information sharing has been a crucial part of delivering safe and efficient rail services in 2020,” she said.

“Customers have shown they want to be able to tap into services that give them real time updates on changes on the network and provide the chance to give direct feedback.

“It is good to see Keolis Downer has plans to introduce new tools to further engage customers to meet this demand.”

Keolis Downer is currently the operator of the light rail networks in Newcastle and on the Gold Coast, and trams in Melbourne. It also operates more than 1000 buses in NSW, WA, SA and Queensland.
